IMPACT OF EARLY INTERVENTION

IMPACT OF EARLY INTERVENTION

Children suffering from reading difficulties have a good chance of meeting up if an early intervention is been given.  Let me share with you the story of two children.

Jimoh Maizat has been an average student right from her nursery class. She continues like that until she gets to Primary 2 before the unbelievable happened. She was given necessary help both in school and at home. She made a dramatic progress to be among the top 10 pupils out of 30 in class by second term. She came first in class by third term. She has been maintaining the first position in class
from that moment.

Ogunsanya Segun has been performing poor just like Jimoh Maizat. He was not given necessary support at home. His parents often punish him and as a result got tired of his performance. They had to withdraw him from school he attends to another school. But the problem remain unsolved. If he had been given help at the tender age, things wouldn't have gone so bad for him.

So many children are not as dull as we think. If necessary help is been given to them at their tender age, they can become the best in class just like Jimoh Maizat.

THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF READING

The three most important elements of reading are
1. Phonological awareness
2. Phoneme awareness
3. Phonics

Phonological awareness is the first approach to reading. It makes children get familiar with sound used in our spoken language. The idea here is to let the children know that the words are made up of sound. Rhyming is mostly used to teach phonological awareness.

Phoneme awareness just like phonological awareness, makes children get used to sound of English.
It involve activities like identifying sound in spoken words and blending of sound to form words orally.

Phonics teaches sounds and their letter representation called 'Phoneme' and also alternative representation of the sound called 'Grapheme' . E.g /ee/ can be represented as 'ee' , 'ea' ,'e'. It also teaches how to blend the sound to form words and how to pronounce unknown words.
